He met her at a funeral, she looked beautiful in black
sat up at the business end – he was watching from the back.
The after-burn party went on till really late.
They helped each other through it, dead drunk – barely a wake
with nothing left, just life and death on tenter hooks.

You could hear her coming and smell her when she’d gone.
He was left alone but not for very long.
Quick to take the plunge, she was quicker to accept.
Diving in deep the marriage vows were set
with barely a breath – blood and flesh on tenter hooks.
A simple test, a last request – no more tenter hooks.

Another mourning comes to pass, another evening built to last,
another candle with no ends, a timeless watch that never mends.
A future bright, a past so dull – who’d have ever thought that
it could be so wonderful, again.

But to keep the story short, her friends were anti-social
while most of his were pissed-up down the local.
The more they saved together the more they spent apart.
They finished what they’d started then started losing heart
with not much said, from heart to head – back on tenter hooks.

The older you get the better it was, the more you’ve loved the more you’ve lost.
The image cuts and passes on, attached to words that don’t belong
to anyone but they still hang in the space between now and then.

So the dead horse bolted avoiding the flogging.
They shut the stable doors and went back to unstable longings.
When worlds fall apart and everything seems vain
weddings a funerals all start to feel the same.
But there’s still hope – no need for rope… tenter hooks.

A time, a place, someone waits – on tenter hooks.
