You could do that if you wanted – it’s just that you don’t want to. You don’t need it and you’re never ever really going to. If you have to you can take it but don’t see when you will have to. You could stop it if you wanted but you really don’t want to. Stop clock-watching – you won’t get in. Stop thick-plotting – you won’t get in. Stop heart and finger crossing – you won’t get in. Just take it somewhere else – you won’t get in. You could do that standing on your head with your back against the wall. You could do it in your sleep without and early morning call. You could do it with your hands tied halfway up your back with a blindfold round your eyes – you could still do that. You keep knocking but you won’t get in. Why keep knocking? You won’t get in. It’s no good knocking – you won’t get in. Just go away – you won’t get in. And like a pyromaniac who goes back to take a photograph or a bad thief in the night with no torch light who only takes one glove you’re on thin ice on a hot day and you just don’t care enough. You’re gonna sink like a stone. You’re gonna sink like a stone. You could be a genius if you’d studied hard at school. You could be on the rich list if you went and sold it all but if you went and sold it all you would have to buy it back and then you’d do it all again and what would be the point in that? Stop flip-flopping – you won’t get in. Stop start-stopping – you won’t get in. Stop mad-hopping – you won’t get in. Give it a rest – you won’t get in. You’re beat-bopping but you won’t get in. Boat-rocking but you won’t get in. Pill-popping but you won’t get in. Go swallow some pride – you’re not coming in.

They bumped into each other at the shop. One was choosing larger – one was crisps and alcho-pops. One was all in colour – one was black and white. Both gave in without a fight. And sealed it with a jalapeno kiss. The night was chilly but with tongues and burning lips the heat went out their arguments right there - and then they had a jalapeno kiss again. They stepped out together like lovers do. Hand in hand they walked and planned without having a clue and so the evening passed in a happy swirly blur, sweet and savoury – both a-slur. And sealed it with a jalapeno kiss. The night was chilly but with tongues and burning lips the heat went out their arguments right there - and then they had a jalapeno kiss again. They said shall we have a cup of tea? They said maybe a T with G. We both have a lot to do, maybe we should make a move it’s late. La la la la la la la la late. But they stayed exactly as they were. No tea was forthcoming but they didn’t seem to care. For a one night stand it seemed to last so long. Neither one was leaving – both of them were gone. Over six years later they feature in a song – a Happy Somethings’ song. And still seal it with a jalapeno kiss. If the mood turns chilly, then with tongues and burning lips the heat goes out their arguments right there - and then they have a jalapeno kiss again. So don’t resist – I insist – give me a jalapeno kiss.

It’s time we walked things through, slowed down like adults sometimes can do. Give each other space to find the right words and put them in the right place. We could mind our P&Qs. Give each other easy clues. Instead of cryptic didn’t-do verbs maybe choose the easy crosswords. It’s time we played it fair. It’s time we laid it bare. So let’s extend the table and lay it all out there – pull up a chair. The time has come around. We’re no longer children in the playground. The bullies and the clowns need to stop their running and sit down and talk. We’ve things to share – maybe secrets even we’re not aware of yet. Maybe some home truths will turn this house back into how it used to be. Yes it’s time we played it fair. It’s time we laid it bare. So let’s extend the table and lay it all out there – pull up a chair. Strewth – haven’t we fought hard enough? Haven’t we done too much push and shove? Maybe if we show a little love it will come to our rescue, then maybe we could ask to kiss it better. Yes it’s time we played it fair. It’s time we laid it bare. So let’s extend the table and lay it all out there – pull up a chair.

Looking for perfection in an imperfect world. Trying to be a boy when you know you’re a girl. You’ve got to keep on keep on keeping on looking for perfection in an imperfect world. Oo, Oo, Oo. Ah,Ah, Ah. Oo, Oo, Oo. Ah,Ah, Ah. Looking for perfection in an imperfect world. Swallowing oysters to spit out a pearl. You’ve got to keep on keep on keeping on looking for perfection in an imperfect world. Oo, Oo, Oo. Ah,Ah, Ah. Oo, Oo, Oo. Ah,Ah, Ah. Just because you see it doesn’t mean that it’s true. (you can see it - you can need it) Everything looks different from a different point of view. (you can feel it - you can want it) When everything seems wrong there’s not much you can do (you can have it - you can do it) but keep on looking for perfection in an imperfect world. Looking for perfection in an imperfect world. Sanding down edges trying to make it all smooth. You’ve got to keep on keep on keeping on looking for perfection in an imperfect world. If you get too high you only see the drop. (you can find it – you can touch it) Looking from the bottom everything’s on top. (you can hold it – you can love it) Everything that comes down must somehow have gone up. (you can live it – believe it) Oo, Oo, Oo. Ah,Ah, Ah. Oo, Oo, Oo. Ah,Ah, Ah. Looking for perfection in an imperfect world. Trying to find logic in theatres of the absurd. You’ve got to keep on keep on keeping on looking for perfection in an imperfect world. Keep looking for perfection in an imperfect world. Keep looking for perfection. You’ve got to keep on keep on keeping on.

shopping 02:57
Shower gel, posh shampoo, lots of wine, red, white and blue, socks and sandals, boots and shoes, sticky tape, string and glue. I’m going shopping on my own. Post-it-notes, headache pills, roses, tulips, daffodils, perfume and prescription meds, sunglasses, A – Z. I’m going shopping on my own. I’m going shopping all alone. I go shopping nearly everyday with no one with me to get in the way. I don’t care if it’s yellow or grey – hey! Chocolate cake, magazines, rhubarb tart with ice cream, cappuccino, daily paper, DVD, book for later. I’m going shopping on my own. I’m not rich, in fact I’m poor, well that’s compared to some, but I prioritise my buys and don’t exceed my income. And I’ve got no money tree but I’m not one to cry, you can still shop for free if you refuse to buy. I went shopping only yesterday, It was the weekend so I didn’t pay for parking, on a Sunday single yellow’s okay – hey! Lipstick, earrings, scarf and bra, some new strings for my guitar, gin and tonic, lemon, lime, a shopping bag to use next time. I’m going shopping on my own. Cause I like shopping on my own. Yes I’m going shopping – alone!

When you’re out in the field Aim to keep you world surreal. Artists see the way they feel. Paint your wild grass blue. Try to make a good impression. It’s no good hoping for discretion. Model a life-drawing session. Paint your wild grass blue. All the colours in the rainbow might not set you free but if monochrome is your tone – use them individually. If you’re a follower of fashion make sure all your patterns clash and dress to kill with a passion. Paint your wild grass blue. If you feel it’s too elite keep your art on the street – You can always grafite! Paint your wild grass blue. If you’re feeling pale and weary – cut yourself some slack. Help your colours stand out clearly – don’t just paint them black. If you think nothing can fix yer Get yourself some fixture mixture. Try to see a bigger picture. Paint your wild grass blue.

I can see that you can see that we won’t be forever. But now is mine and yours it’s time for us to get it together. Give an inch to gain a mile. Lose inhibitions to find your style. Take a moment to take a while with me. The moon and sky - the reasons why you and I are smiling. The sun and stars – galaxies far away. It’s all so beguiling. The world’s heavy – shoulders weak, take the weight off your feet. Why don’t you pull up a set with me. Everything’s so trivial – indeed it’s really spiritual and free – it’s nearly mind blowing. But don’t go steep, don’t get deep, wallow in the shallows. Hang with us, laugh, joke – just don’t go to the gallows. The sand’s gritty but the eggs are fine. The clock’s ticking but never mind. Take a moment to take some time with me. Everything’s so trivial – indeed it’s really spiritual and free – it’s nearly mind blowing. I can see. You can see. We won’t be forever.

Retro is nouveau. Retro is nouveau. You can see it everywhere you look. Everywhere you go it’s new for old stuff ‘cause retro is nouveau. You can hear it travelling down the years. All the songs you like are already in your ears ‘cause retro is nouveau. It’s not cheap – it’s not antique. Retro is nouveau. It is chic – not obsolete. Retro is nouveau. Retro is nouveau. Retro is nouveau. Everything you do’s been done before. Nothing is original anymore ‘cause retro is nouveau. Sow what you reap - we’re not sheep. Retro is nouveau. Hide and seek – finders keep. Retro is nouveau. Retro is nouveau. Retro is nouveau. Retro is nouveau. Retro is nouveau.

You Know What To Do I’m happy if you’re happy. I’m happy if you’re happy but if you’re unhappy I’m unhappy too. If you’re not interested in me then I’m not interested in you. But if you ask questions of me I’ll answer them. Then I’ll ask questions of you too. So you know what to do. I’m sorry if you’re sorry but I’m not sorry if you’re not sorry. I’m not sorry unless you’re sorry too. If you’re not talking to me then I’m not talking to you but if you want to write a letter to try and make it better I’ll read it through. So you know what to do. If we never think to wonder why nothing ever seems to change then maybe you and I need to stop and think again ‘Cause if I am happy, you are happy and if you are happy, I am happy, so let’s choose happy instead of being mean. Let’s smile in the face of fate, forgive all mistakes, ourselves, each other and anyone in-between and let’s see if we can be happy again.

tenterhooks 04:20
He met her at a funeral, she looked beautiful in black sat up at the business end – he was watching from the back. The after-burn party went on till really late. They helped each other through it, dead drunk – barely a wake with nothing left, just life and death on tenterhooks. You could hear her coming and smell her when she’d gone. He was left alone but not for very long. Quick to take the plunge, she was quicker to accept. Diving in deep the marriage vows were set with barely a breath – blood and flesh on tenterhooks. A simple test, a last request – no more tenterhooks. Another mourning comes to pass, another evening built to last, another candle with no ends, a timeless watch that never mends. A future bright, a past so dull – who’d have ever thought that it could be so wonderful, again. But to keep the story short, her friends were anti-social while most of his were pissed-up down the local. The more they saved together the more they spent apart. They finished what they’d started then started losing heart with not much said, from heart to head – back on tenterhooks. The older you get the better it was, the more you’ve loved the more you’ve lost. The image cuts and passes on, attached to words that don’t belong to anyone but they still hang in the space between now and then. So the dead horse bolted avoiding the flogging. They shut the stable doors and went back to unstable longings. When worlds fall apart and everything seems vain weddings a funerals all start to feel the same. But there’s still hope – no need for rope… tenterhooks. A time, a place, someone waits – on tenterhooks.

You’d think I was a doctor with a PhD, or a high degree in how to be me. You’d think by now I’d be more reflective than I seem to be and my subject matter less subjective - objectivity’s what I’m after. What I’m after’s objectivity. I know it should come easily but I object to what I see. I’ve had my share of drugs and spills and bellyaching bitter pills and now I’ve had an overdose of thrills it’s time for objectivity. What I’m after’s objectivity. I know it should come easily but I object to what I see. Help me please. Help me please. Help me please - find simplicity. Help me please. Help me please. Help me please – get some clarity. I need objectivity. I know my limitations, my knowledge is quite limited to imitations of someone that’s in my head. I studied at the school of live but as you can probably see I left that school and like a fool missed out on university – now what I’m after, what I’m after’s objectivity. I know it should come easily but I object to what I see. Help me please. Help me please. Help me please - find simplicity. Help me please. Help me please. Help me please – get some clarity. I need objectivity. I need objectivity. I need objectivity. I need some objectivity.

You were waiting at the bar – said you hadn’t come that far, Got us both a G&T – and then said ‘all the best’. We went and found a corner seat – I sat looking at my feet, then I looked up and caught you looking at my chest. Well you can look as much as you want but keep your hands to yourself – the only thing allowed to wander is your mind. Of one thing I am sure – we’ve both been here before and neither of us know just who we’ll find. You smiled and raised your glass, said ‘it’s good to meet at last. I knew we would but didn’t know quite when. The internet is fine I guess – but in the flesh is best…’ I stared down at my feet again. Well you can look as much as you want but keep your hands to yourself – the only thing allowed to wander is your mind. I’d forgotten what it’s like – when you’ve not been on a bike for a long time you forget how hard it can be. To get the balance right, don’t grip the handlebars too tight, check the brakes – but let the wheels run free. I said ‘let’s have another drink’ – bought myself some time to think, you some crisps and half a beer, me lime and soda without ice. I said ‘look you’re very nice – normally I don’t think twice but this time I’ve got to take it slow – so… You can look as much as you want but keep your hands to yourself – the only thing I want right now’s the number to your phone. You need to know that we’re just friends and though I might see you again, for now – I’m happy on my own. I’m Happy on my own.

It’s the death of the answer, the birth of the question, it’s time for your lesson in love. Nothing is certain, facts all a-quiver, it’s time to see if you’re a winner in love. Lessons in love – you get back what you give. Lessons in love – on a two-way street you live. Lessons in love – in a house that’s built to share and if you’re lucky that is where you’ll learn your lessons in love. Lessons in love should really be the easiest lessons but lessons in love can sometimes be the hardest lessons to learn. The hardest lessons to learn. When you’ve lost all reason and you’re looking for something and all you’re finding is nothing – it’s a lesson in love. When you’re dying of hunger and you’re living through danger and you find yourself a stranger – it’s a lesson in love. Lessons in love – just count one to three. Lessons in love – just read A,B,C. Lessons in love – see if you can be the one you want to be through lessons in love. Lessons in love should really be the easiest lessons but lessons in love can sometimes be the hardest lessons to learn. The hardest lessons to learn. It’s the death of the answer, the birth of the question, it’s time for your lesson in love.

Raise your glasses – drink me a toast, absent friends are here. All my love and best wishes to the hosts, may your dreams never clear. Light the candle – cut the cake. Turn failure into fate. Don’t make the same mistake – cause if you do then you’ll know what it’s like to be someone they never knew and you’ll see that I loved you. I’ll raise a smile – drink you a toast but it makes me sad. So raise your glasses and have one on me – you always had. And don’t play songs like you used to do with meanings that aren’t true, songs they’ll see right through – cause if you do then you’ll know what it’s like to be someone they never knew and you’ll see that I loved you. I loved you.

Some happy thing is trying to make me smile. Some happy things make me stop for a while but some happy things are going out of style and I don’t want to wait and be too late. Some happy things make me wonder why. Some happy things make me want to try harder but some happy things make me want to cry ‘cause I just can’t take happy heart ache. Don’t you worry too much if you’re feeling down. Make sure that you stay in touch – things will turn around. A little love and patience will help you take the strain till some happy thing comes round again. Some happy thing is making me shout. Some happy thing knows what it’s all about. Some happy thing helps the right words to come out in the nick of time – sometimes they even rhyme. And if reason should elude you and not much is making sense remember all things must pass and time’s the evidence. But while everything keeps changing and nothing stays the same well, some happy things come round again.
