No time to go and buy a tree.
No time to order groceries.
Too late to invite friends for tea -
they’ll all be somewhere else.
Don’t want to hear the dang dong ding.
Don’t need a message from the King.
Not really into worshipping
except for Frank and Bing.
And nothing’s just for Christmas.
Nothing’s just for Christmas.
Everything in moderation we agree.
One day at a time by degrees
but wouldn’t it be nice if we
were nice the whole year long.
Cause nothing’s just for Christmas.
Nothing’s just for Christmas.
When things explode it’s hard to hear the Christmas cheer.
Ghosts of Christmas pasts are haunting and so near.
The only thing to do is painfully clear - love each other.
Hark the hairy angel sings.
Wonder what next year will bring.
Could we ever learn to sing
as one not us and them?
Peace on Earth and mercy mild?
That would be nice - amen.
Cause nothing’s just for Christmas.
Nothing’s just for Christmas.
It’s for life.

Someone said it’s just like Christmas - I suppose they might be right,
the adverts are all glowing and the TV’s black and white.
Cards are growing all around - the square has got a tree
but it doesn’t feel like Christmas - maybe it’s just me.
Someone said it’s just like Christmas but I’m not sure if it’s true
cause it never feels like Christmas when I’m not with you.
Please don’t get me wrong - I’m doing quite all right,
it’s just been a noisy day I’m ready for a quiet night.
Friends have come and gone with their good wishes left behind,
I’m feeling very comfortable and really I don’t mind.
I guess it could be Christmas cause we really had a do
but it never feels like Christmas when I’m not with you.
Come the Summertime - we are at our best,
writing side by side, making our Christmas lists.
Drinking in the snowballs - 25 in the shade,
sunglasses on - more Advocaat than lemonade.
In the evening disco lights are bouncing off the mirror-balls
and everybody’s dancing on the deck and in the halls
and it feels just like we’re floating and I guess we really are,
I look up to the darkness and all I see are stars
and someone says it’s just like Christmas - I guess it’s kind of true
cause it always feels like Christmas when I’m with you.

The Present
01:57
|
|||
the present is an excellent way
for someone to say
for someone to show
how little they know about you
still we try to buy
the right design
the thing that chimes
and rings true
and tells the recipient
I know you
I do
then they re-wrap
and they re-name
or take it back
and try to claim
that they’ve lost the receipt
yes we lost the receipt - we’re sure it came from here
can we have a refund or make an exchange
for something that we want?
and they try and try
but to no avail
‘cause what they don’t know
is it was bought in a sale
five years ago
five years ago - all that time ago
and five years ago it was such a bargain
five years ago
five years ago - a long long time ago
five years ago - before you even knew them
so much for the present

Pickle Your Nuts
02:10
|
|||
Some people make jelly jam,
some folk grow their own ham.
Some like to bake their own bread,
some grow mushrooms under their bed.
Some pull weeds to make their tea,
some only drink chicory
and pull up roots gingerly
then garlic all their food but we
just pickle our nuts that’s what we do.
We can show you how to pickle yours too.
Stick with us, we’ll show you how
to pickle your nuts in half an hour.
Some like allotments, some like trains,
some like flying aeroplanes.
Some like to read, some like to cook,
some like reading cookery books.
Some like rude, some like raw,
some like surface, some like core.
Some don’t know what they do it for
but do it anyway
and we pickle our nuts that’s what we do.
We can show you how to pickle yours too.
Stick with us, we’ll show you how
to pickle your nuts in half an hour.
Everyone needs to sleep,
everyone needs to breathe.
Everyone needs everyone
and everyone will have to leave.
Everybody comes and goes,
nobody knows what they don’t know.
Everyone is I, me, mine
and we’re all waiting… meantime
we pickle our nuts that’s what we do.
We can show you how to pickle yours too.
Stick with us, we’ll show you how
to pickle your nuts in half an hour.
Some pickle onions, some do eggs,
some mix up pickles in their heads.
Some like it sour, some like sweet,
Some do salty, some do neat.
Some are veggie, others vegan,
some eat meat and some don’t even
think about what they have eaten.
Some of them don’t stop
but we
pickle our nuts that’s what we do.
We can show you how to pickle yours too.
Stick with us, we’ll show you how
to pickle your nuts in half an hour.
Pickle your nuts - that means you.
A pickled nut will see you through.
You can roast or salt or eat them fresh
but pickled nuts are the best.

It’s Christmas time - we’re as miserable as sin.
Everybody’s out - we’re staying in.
There’s nothing much to say so we don’t say anything
and it’s Christmas time again.
It’s Christmas time and it’s not how it should be.
There aren’t any lights and there isn’t any tree.
There’s only you and there’s only me
and it’s Christmas time again.
It’s Christmas time and it’s just like we feared.
Everyone’s invited – no one has appeared.
Not even a fairy or the man with the beard is coming here.
It’s Christmas time and we’re not going out.
We’ll just sit around and moan about how
it’s Christmas time and we don’t want to do whatever
other people do at Christmas time.
It’s Christmas time and it’s not what we hope for.
The nights have all drawn in - the days are falling short.
It feels like ten o’clock but it’s only four in the afternoon – oh the gloom
It’s Christmas time - we’re as miserable as sin.
Everybody’s out - we’re staying in.
There’s nothing much to say so we don’t say anything
and it’s Christmas time again.
Yes it’s Christmas time again.
Yes it’s Christmas time again.
Yes it’s Christmas time again.

December (Happy solo)
03:51
|
|||
I’m gonna stay sober this December
so when it’s over I can remember
and don’t have to regret what I can’t forget
like every other year.
I’m gonna be on my best behaviour.
I’m gonna do us all a favour
and stay out of the way, watch what I say.
Hey - I’m trying to allay your fears
by telling you I’ll do the best I can.
I can’t promise but I’ll do the best I can.
I’ll try my best not to be me - till January.
No doubt I’ll get it wrong but I’ll put it right.
If I need to I’ll apologise.
I’ll work hard to keep things light.
I won’t go dark on you at night
and in the morning I’ll be nice,
bring you tea and toast.
Alright - let’s skip the last bit.
Be realistic.
It’s been a wet November.
Too much crying, too much lying,
not much tenderness.
And there’s only so many tears
when more means less
and everybody’s mess rises to the top.
It’s anybody’s guess when it’s gonna stop
so I guess it’s best that it never starts
and a little tact and a little heart
can go a long way at this time of year.
I’m gonna do the best I can.
I can’t promise but I’ll do the best I can.
I’ll try my best not to be me.

Some happy thing is trying to make me smile.
Some happy things make me stop for a while
but some happy things are going out of style
and I don’t want to wait and be too late.
Some happy things make me wonder why.
Some happy things make me want to try harder
but some happy things make me want to cry
‘cause I just can’t take happy heart ache.
Don’t you worry too much if you’re feeling down.
Make sure that you stay in touch – things will turn around.
A little love and patience will help you take the strain
till some happy thing comes round again.
Some happy thing is making me shout.
Some happy thing knows what it’s all about.
Some happy thing helps the right words to come out
in the nick of time – sometimes they even rhyme.
And if reason should elude you and not much is making sense
remember all things must pass and time’s the evidence.
But while everything keeps changing and nothing stays the same
well, some happy things come round again.

Time Flies
02:49
|
|||
Time really flies – yes it does.
You can feel it, you can fear it but you can’t stop it because
like memories of confetti and autumn falling from the trees –
time makes its way on the breeze.
And there is no word from above.
The only word left to speak with is love
and elusive as it is, it’s the one thing left to give
when you’re empty of all the other stuff.
And the irony of giving is there’s nothing ours to give,
the complexity of living hides a simpler way to live
and despite all the reasoning the logic seems to slip,
there’s comfort in the thought that we did what we did.
The journey’s rough and learning curves are steep.
Both faith and disbelief require some kind of leap
and as easy as it seems, you can’t live in your dreams.
If you do, then it’s true – you’re always half-asleep.
The balance keeps on shifting, nothing feels as it should.
The bright lights blind, you cannot find the trees for the wood.
The bigger picture’s broken, your plans as clear as mud.
But would you want to know the future - even if you could.

New Life
02:21
|
|||
Welcome to your new life - start any time you want.
Any day or week or month - it’s always only just begun.
Welcome to your new world - time to star anew.
Time for change, start rearranging everything that you do.
Welcome to your new life - start as you mean to go on.
Abandon your delusions - stop righting all your wrongs.
Stop hoping for an answer - start writing your own past.
Your future’s up there waiting, no time for hesitating
‘cause you know that it can’t last.
And it starts here - right away.
Where you are now - this is the day.
There’s no tomorrow - just cliché.
Welcome to your new life.
Welcome to your new life.
Welcome to a new way - one that you can keep.
As soon as you start walking you’ll find it at your feet.
No need for resolutions - no need for tricks and games.
Everything keeps changing anyway and nothing ever stays the same.
And it starts here - right away.
Where you are now - this is your day.
There are no tomorrows - just clichés.
Welcome to your new life.
Welcome to your new life.
There’s always a new world.
There’s always a new way.
There’s always a new you.
Welcome your new life.

No Bother
02:55
|
|||
Everybody’s doing the best that they can
trying to find ways to help each other and
not tread on each other’s fingers and toes.
What someone else is going through no one knows.
It’s no bother - look after each other.
It pays to be cautious and take some time.
It’s quite important not to undermine
efforts of others trying to please.
Unchecked selfishness is like a disease.
It’s easy to hurt - it’s easy to be hurt too.
We don’t seem to notice much now
but we’ll notice it when it’s gone.
The best we can do is somehow
try to write it down in a song
so everyone can sing along
and we can hear you.
We don’t seem to notice much now
but we’ll notice it when it’s gone.
It’s always best not to leave things too late.
Memories are great as long as they last
but they won’t last forever.
There are so many things we don’t understand.
We are just simple folks who play in a band.
We have no message telling you what to do
except look after yourself and others too.
It’s should be no bother to look after each other.
Look after yourselves - look after each other.
Make sure you bother to bother to take care of each other.
